Presentation copy. Frontispiece by Andrew Wyeth. Presentation slip from Rinehart & Company, Inc. , Stanley M. Rinehart, Jr. , Frederick R. Rinehart, and Hervey Allen pasted to rear of frontis. Pasted on half-title page is a letter from Rinehart & Company in response to screenwriter Garnett Weston ("Pony Soldier, " "Bulldog Drummond, " "The Great Train Robbery") dated 25th January 1950. Publishers explain they do not yet know if the fourth book in Allen's series, The Disinherited, will be published. (Allen had died a month earlier in Florida. ) Toward the Morning is the third of what was to be a five-volume saga, a pentalogy, spread across the formative years of the United States. Previous owner (assumed Garnett Weston) has pasted on the front and rear endpages and the reverse of the half-title page coloured paintings and description from a January 1951 pamphlet featuring Hervey Allen's 'The City in the Dawn. ' This copy of Toward the Morning, in pale tan linen-covered boards with blue lettering on front and spine and a blind engraving on front entitled The Disinherited. ; Light wear to boards, ink stain on bottom edge of final 63 pp. , text not affected. Dust jacket shows light edge wear, creasing, now contained in mylar cover. ; 458 pages
